Clan Wars was released back after free trade and PvP was removed from the Wilderness in an attempt to replace what clans lost back then. However, there is a lot of controversy. For instance, some argue that it discouraged clans from fighting in the Wilderness because of the non-dangerous element of it and because of that, those who joined the game during that time never became exposed to the Wilderness as a primary source of PvP activity.
However, there are also some who argue that there are problems with removing it. For example, tournaments and Jagex Cup fights may be very difficult to fight in as with Clan Wars there is a very strict set of rules.
