Ddosing Explained, Since Most Rsers Are...

I'm tired of hearing "fix DDosing Jagex!!"... you can't "fix DDoSing". There is no "fixing" it. It's pretty annoying hearing kids complain about it (putting it in "nice" terms here).. Allow me to explain how it all works...

Every server has a certain amount of bandwitdh it can handle. Once you exceed that amount you start running into problems. There are several types of DDoS techniques and ways about doing it.. I like to call them "short term" and "long term".. Long term attacks are usually the stronger ones that are able to keep a server offline for a extended period of time (days). Short term attacks are usually only strong enough to cause the server (world or worlds if the server is hosting several worlds) to reboot or lag briefly. Basically all a ddos is is thousands or hundreds of thousands of IPs sending data to another IP in a very short period of time. This causes the target to overload and therefore lag, reboot, or crash. The people ddosing the servers are just a bunch of kids who bought "programs" off whatever site and press a button. Most of them don't know what they are doing.

So how can Jagex protect their servers from these script kiddie attacks? For one Jagex doesn't host their servers (at least they didn't whne I last checked some years ago). So messing their the servers configuration and security DIRECTLY (ie they log into root and mess w/ it) is most likely out of their hands. All they can do is complain/send a ticket to the company hosting it and hope that they make the appropiate changes. Jagex could also upgrade their servers -- this wouldn't directly fix the issue. As a semi-to-last resort they could implement a firewall if things get bad enough. The solution is simply for them to hire someone who actually knows what they are doing (preferebly a whitehat)...

The above is regarding server ddos'... you being ddos'd is a whole different story.

Point being that creating petitions and complaining to Jagex like 12-year-olds isn't going to fix anything but cause more hysteria.
(this isn't a rant, complaint, or whatever.. just trying to educate)
