I've been gone from Zybez for a couple years and decided to lurk these forums. Clan Discussion was the highlight of my 2008-2011 years. It's depressing to look at now, especially as I read these threads and the responses within them. If this suggestion falls on deaf ears, then consider this my final ****-you to the clan world for destroying itself.
Thoughts to fix clanning
1. Push for another Clan Cup
2. Recruit outside of the existing bubble and get off of your high horses
3. Realize you're ****ing up your own world
Rationale
1) Reddit is now the best means of communication towards Jagex. It is also the best platform to gain support. ****, my first ever /r/2007scape post was a thread suggesting for Castle Wars to provide a ticket to the loser. A J-Mod replied and it was changed two months later.
If Jagex have their ***** so hard for an E-Sport market and ROT has been wiping the floor in DMM, why don't we push for another Clan Cup? Spam the /r/2007scape subreddit and garner support. It's easy and it'll bring attention to the clan world. The clan world gets more exposure, while Jagex gets to get their E-Sport ***** wet with a real competition (that they can't botch with nuclear gas a-la DMM). This would encourage creation of more clans and put attention to the quality of Zybez based clans. The first Clan Cup in 2009 ended up ushering the golden era of the 2010-2012 days, where the clan world was bigger than ever. Why not try to do it again?
2) When I lurked and saw someone asked about pushing and bridging towards Reddit, it was met with these replies:
- after some of the stuff ive seen skillers post on there, no thanks.
- Never liked Reddit. Also I think Jagex gives them lots of attention and forgets everything else.
- Reddit is full of people who have an opinion but literally zero foresight considering gameplay changes and their potential impact. They're only interested in making virtual money (suggesting changes to affect merching), skilling, spreading cancerous memes, and PVM.
- If you try to bring Reddit here, they'll infect this site with their cancer, and if you go there, they will drown out your "PK community" voices.
- I'm happy for all those **** reddit memes to stay there, ty
- The average person on Reddit is really, really bad at anything they are interested in so they won't really bring in real quality. Plus the community is very bad from what I've seen, and I am not even mentioning the horrible layout now.
Get off of your high horses. No matter how bad Reddit is - they are the better representation of the current player-base. They are also one of the better, if not the best platforms to recruit. There should be recruiting from the player-base outside of the dwindling pool of clanners we already have (an old, cynical, and dying breed). You forget that 2010 was rampant with hormonally charged 13-16 year olds. Reddit users and regular players outside of Zybez only seem bad because this community is looking back with rose-tinted glasses. The community wasn't any better then. Quality isn't suddenly created. It takes time for players to acclimate and develop into figures like MattyB, Bishinmo, Ghjjf, and etc. The peak of the clan world wasn't fun because of the lack of memes, ****-posting, or skillers, but rather because it had more people in general which more discourse and entertainment. You can't have both quality and quantity without working for it.
The current recruitment system likely consists of existing clanners switching clans and the odd friend that is persuaded to join. Correct me if I'm wrong. Why not recruit from the casual population, for ****s sake? In casual conversation in-game, most players don't even realize that clans outside of ROT even exist. Taking in more members, even with any odd personalities or inexperience, is worthwhile to combat the deteriorating clan world population. There needs to be a shift away from this elitism. At this rate, you folks can have fun bickering with the same people that have been bickering for the last 7 years. It's the same faces, because the clan world isn't open to recruiting to a new crowd. Eventually, enough people are going to realize (if they haven't already) that it's not fun arguing/fighting/crashing/**** waving with the same 200 people and 3 clans again and again.
3) Get. The. ****. Out. Of. Your. Own. Way.
The clan world killed/continues to kill itself. That's why it's ****.
Clans are ruining the average clanner's experience. No wonder people are leaving and nobody wants to join. Clans DDOS one another, crash one another, and send spies into one another. The goal seems to be preventing other clans from growing. As individuals take down rivals, they take down the community as a whole. This game is coming closer to two decades old. People are too old for this ****. Who the **** wants to join a clan world that essentially is killing itself? No wonder the wilderness is dead. Who wants to gear up and fight in F2P wildy, just to get crashed? What casual player is willing to join that ****? Nobody. It's filled with pointless drama and sabotage.
Clans such as The Death Monkeighs (do they still exist? I don't know) in 2007-2009 provided excellent bridges to the clanning community. It was a simple step up. Most of them don't exist anymore, and the jump towards high-end clanning is drastic. Clans are hardly being promoted, while junior clans seem to have even less exposure. I can tell you that it looks like a sink or swim scenario from the outside, which ends up scaring away casual players. The clan world needs these casual players to continue going on. Runescape is filled with players who want these experiences, but don't know it exists. Be willing to deal with players who primarily enjoy skilling or PvM. There are players who want to part-time pvp in an organized setting. Part-time members is still better than none at all. Otherwise, have fun circle-jerking with the same experience people as it becomes harder and harder to find fights.
The clan world has notoriously been on its high horse and looks down on recruiting from any other means than the traditional ones. It's time to get with the times.
TL;DR: Get exposure, recruit from everywhere, and stop ruining your own fun by sucking the fun out of your community.
Final thoughts and my last '**** you'
Stop clinging to the past and start adapting to change. The Clan World looks sad and depressing as it is. 10 minutes of lurking on this forum shows a consensus that it's stagnant and deteriorating. For this, clans have nothing to blame but themselves. It's tragic and infuriating that this was once the place of some of my best gaming experiences. Frankly, while I personally think these steps and solutions are the logicals way of sustaining the clan world for a few precious more years, I don't think it'll happen. There's too much pride floating around and this'll likely be torn apart anyway. **** the clan world for destroying itself. **** the fact that I'm playing a 16 year old game and I miss the golden days.
I'll check back here in another couple years.
